Kendō Sanbai — Never Fight the Wrong Battle
In Japanese martial arts, there is an old saying: 「剣道三倍」 (Kendō Sanbai).
It is often misunderstood as meaning that a kendo practitioner is "three times stronger." That is not the real lesson.
The saying reflects the enormous advantage of facing an opponent armed with a weapon. A skilled swordsman is not simply another martial artist—he is operating under completely different conditions. Charging into that fight with only courage and pride is not bravery; it is poor judgment.
The principle applies far beyond martial arts.
Before entering any conflict—whether in business, politics, negotiations, or even war—you must first understand your opponent's true capabilities. If your competitor has overwhelming advantages in resources, technology, experience, or market position, attacking head-on may be the fastest path to defeat.
Many people fight because of ego. They refuse to back down because they want to prove they are right. But successful leaders know that pride does not win battles. Strategy does.
Sometimes the wisest decision is to avoid the fight altogether. Sometimes it is better to change the battlefield, strengthen your position, or wait until the odds improve. There is no shame in refusing a battle you cannot win.
The lesson of 「剣道三倍」 is simple: never underestimate your opponent. Know their strength before you decide to fight. Winning begins long before the first move is made.
P.S. It's like the saying, "Don't bring a knife to a gunfight."
