The Japanese character 満 (man / mitasu) carries the idea of being "full," "complete," or "filled to the proper amount." It appears in many everyday words. A full moon is 満月 (mangetsu), a perfect score is 満点 (manten), and satisfaction is 満足 (manzoku). In each case, the idea is the same—nothing important is missing.

 

The opposite is just as interesting. Add the character 不 (fu), meaning "not," and you get 不満 (fuman), or dissatisfaction. The feeling of unhappiness comes not from having nothing, but from believing something is lacking. Likewise, 不足 (fusoku) means shortage or insufficiency.

 

This simple character reflects an important way of thinking. Satisfaction is not always about having more. Sometimes it comes from recognizing that what you already have is enough. In business, chasing endless growth without appreciating achievements often leads to frustration. Knowing when something is "full" can be just as valuable as striving for more.

 

Perhaps the real lesson of 満 is this: happiness begins not when everything is perfect, but when you recognize that enough can already be complete.
