The Young Man Who Became the First to Sail the Pacific Alone

 

In 1962, a 23-year-old Japanese auto parts salesman set out to accomplish something no one had ever done before. His name was Kenichi Horie (堀江謙一), and he left Nishinomiya, Japan, aboard a tiny 19-foot plywood sailboat he built himself, named Mermaid. His destination was San Francisco—more than 5,000 miles across the world's largest ocean.

 

There was one problem: he had no passport, no visa, and almost no money. Japanese authorities considered the voyage too dangerous and refused to approve it. Rather than give up on his dream, Horie quietly slipped out of Nishinomiya Harbor on May 12, 1962.

 

For 94 days, he sailed completely alone. There was no GPS, no satellite communications, no internet, and no rescue service waiting if something went wrong. He relied on celestial navigation, determination, and the belief that his small boat—and his own spirit—were strong enough to carry him across the vast Pacific. When he arrived in San Francisco on August 12, 1962, he became the first person in history to complete a solo, non-stop crossing of the Pacific Ocean by yacht.

 

Expecting to be arrested for entering the United States without a passport or visa, Horie instead received a hero's welcome. San Francisco's mayor granted him permission to enter the country and presented him with the Key to the City. Overnight, the young man who had secretly departed Japan became an international symbol of courage, determination, and adventure.

 

Horie did not stop there. In 1973–74, he became the first Japanese to complete a solo, non-stop circumnavigation of the globe. Six decades after his first Pacific crossing, at the age of 83, he crossed the Pacific alone once again aboard Mermaid III, becoming the oldest person ever to complete a solo, non-stop Pacific crossing.

 

Perhaps the most remarkable part of his story is that he has never forgotten where his journey began. Even today, Kenichi Horie continues to live in Ashiya, Hyogo Prefecture. If you visit Shin Nishinomiya Yacht Harbor, just a few minutes from his hometown, you can see Mermaid III proudly displayed. Standing before the yacht, it is hard to imagine that such a modest vessel carried an 83-year-old sailor safely across the Pacific Ocean.

 

Some people leave behind stories. Kenichi Horie left behind a wake across the Pacific—one that still inspires anyone who believes that impossible dreams can become reality if they have the courage to leave the safety of the harbor.
