Kijō no Kūron (机上の空論)
The Real World Is the Final Judge

One of my favorite Japanese expressions is kijō no kūron (机上の空論). Literally, it means "an empty theory on a desk." It describes an idea that appears convincing in a meeting or on paper but falls apart when tested in the real world.

Planning is important. Research is important. Analysis is important. But none of them can replace experience.

In business, it is easy to spend weeks creating presentations, spreadsheets, and strategic plans. Everything may seem logical, yet customers behave differently than expected, competitors change direction, and unexpected problems arise. Reality quickly exposes weaknesses that no conference room discussion can reveal.

This is why Japanese manufacturers place such importance on genba (現場)—the actual place where work is done. Engineers leave their desks to visit the factory floor. Executives meet customers face to face. Decisions are based not only on reports but also on firsthand observation.

The same principle applies to life. Opinions are easy. Experience is difficult. Anyone can develop a theory, but only reality can determine whether it works.

A good plan is only the beginning.

Ideas become wisdom only after they are tested.

The real world is the final judge.
