A Private University in Japan That Took Over 300 Years to Build

 

Some ideas take years to become reality. This one took more than 300 years.

 

In 1549, the Catholic Jesuit missionary Francis Xavier arrived in Japan. During his time there, Xavier became impressed by the Japanese people and their interest in learning. He envisioned establishing a university in Japan where people could pursue higher education.

 

But his vision would not be realized during his lifetime.

 

More than three centuries later, in 1906, Pope Pius X asked the Society of Jesus to establish a Catholic institution of higher education in Japan. In 1908, three Jesuit priests arrived in Japan to begin the work.

 

Finally, in 1913, Sophia University (上智大学) opened in Tokyo.

 

The university began modestly, with only 15 students and three departments: philosophy, German literature, and commerce. Today, Sophia has grown into one of Japan's internationally recognized private universities.

 

Even its name reflects its origins. "Sophia" comes from the Greek word for "wisdom," while its Japanese name, 上智 (Jōchi), expresses the idea of higher or supreme wisdom.

 

What fascinates me most is not simply the history of the university, but the patience behind the idea.

 

Francis Xavier planted the seed in the 16th century.

 

It finally took root more than 300 years later.

 

Some visions are bigger than the people who first imagine them.
