Ichiren Takushō (一蓮托生) — We Are in This Together

 

The Japanese expression ichiren takushō (一蓮托生) literally means “to be born together on the same lotus.”

 

Its origin is Buddhist. The lotus is an important symbol in Buddhism, and the expression originally referred to the belief that people could be reborn together on the same lotus in the Pure Land after death.

 

Over time, its meaning expanded beyond religion.

 

Today, ichiren takushō describes people who share the same fate—for better or worse. It is similar to saying, “We are all in the same boat.” Once we decide to move forward together, we also accept the consequences together.

 

There is an important lesson here for business and leadership.

 

Success is easy to share. Responsibility is harder.

 

True partnership means not disappearing when things go wrong. Leaders should not take credit for success while blaming others for failure. Teams become stronger when everyone understands that their decisions, risks, responsibilities, and results are connected.

 

Ichiren takushō reminds us:
