Be a Pioneer

Great companies do not always begin with a grand business plan. Sometimes they begin with a single experience.

 

Pioneer’s story began with Nozomu Matsumoto (松本望), born in Kobe, Japan, in 1905. His father was a Christian missionary and pastor. That background was reflected in the name of his company, Fukuin Shokai Denki Seisakusho (福音商会電機製作所). Fukuin (福音) means “gospel” or “good news.”

 

In 1930, Matsumoto heard music through an imported American dynamic speaker. He was so impressed by the sound that he wanted more people in Japan to experience it.

 

Instead of simply admiring the technology, he decided to build one himself.

 

After years of experimentation, he developed the A-8 dynamic speaker in 1937 and gave it the name “Pioneer.” It was originally the name of the product, not the company.

 

During World War II, his company had to adapt, producing transformers for aviation radios as a subcontractor for Tokyo Shibaura Denki, today’s Toshiba. But after the war ended, Matsumoto quickly returned to his original passion: speakers.

 

The company survived and grew. In 1961, it finally adopted Pioneer as its corporate name.

 

Matsumoto heard something that moved him. He became curious. He learned how it worked. Then he built it himself.
