Loyalty vs. Effort — 一所懸命 and 一生懸命

 

In modern Japanese, 一生懸命 (isshō kenmei) means to work very hard, give your best effort, or devote yourself completely to something.

 

But the expression has an interesting origin.

 

The older phrase was 一所懸命 (issho kenmei). Although the two sound almost identical, the first characters are different. 一所 means “one place,” while 一生 means “one’s whole life.”

 

In feudal Japan, a samurai was given land by his lord. That land supported his family and represented his position and responsibility. Protecting it was therefore extremely important. 一所懸命 originally meant putting one’s life on the line to defend one place.

 

It was about loyalty, responsibility, and commitment.

 

Over time, 一所懸命 evolved into the more commonly used 一生懸命. The emphasis gradually shifted from protecting what was entrusted to you to putting your full effort into what you are doing.

 

There is an interesting business lesson here.

 

Effort matters. Working hard matters. But before asking, “How hard am I working?” perhaps we should ask, “What am I working so hard to protect?”

 

一生懸命 teaches us to give our best.

 

一所懸命 reminds us why we give our best.
