Zero Lost Luggage — The Japanese Standard of Service

Japan’s Kansai International Airport (KIX) opened in September 1994. Since then, it has reportedly maintained an extraordinary record: zero pieces of luggage lost due to the airport’s own baggage-handling operations.

This does not mean every bag has always arrived with every passenger. An airline may fail to load a bag, send it on the wrong flight, or leave it behind at another airport. Those are airline-related baggage problems and are different from KIX itself losing luggage during airport handling.

KIX’s performance is also part of a broader Asian strength. According to Skytrax’s 2026 World’s Best Airport for Baggage Delivery ranking:

Taiwan Taoyuan (TPE) — Taiwan
Fukuoka (FUK) — Japan
Kansai International (KIX) — Japan
Tokyo Haneda (HND) — Japan
Singapore Changi (SIN) — Singapore
Tokyo Narita (NRT) — Japan
Centrair Nagoya (NGO) — Japan
Shenzhen Bao’an (SZX) — China
Seoul Incheon (ICN) — South Korea
Bahrain (BAH) — Bahrain

Five of the Top 10 are Japanese airports.

Perhaps KIX’s remarkable record is not just about one airport. It reflects something broader about Japanese service culture: attention to detail, consistency, and taking responsibility for things customers may never see.

Quality means doing the small things correctly—even when nobody is watching.
