The Imperial Hotel — Japan’s Guest House to the World
In the late 19th century, Japan faced an important challenge.

 

After centuries of relative isolation, Japan had opened its doors to the world. The government wanted Western nations to recognize Japan as a modern country and, eventually, renegotiate the unequal treaties imposed upon it.

 

But there was a practical problem.

 

Where could Japan properly welcome important foreign visitors?

 

Tokyo had few Western-style accommodations suitable for diplomats, government officials, and international business leaders.

 

Foreign Minister Kaoru Inoue believed Japan needed a world-class hotel. With support from prominent business leaders, including Eiichi Shibusawa and Kihachiro Okura, the Imperial Hotel was established and opened in Hibiya, Tokyo, in 1890.

 

It was not technically a government-owned hotel. However, its creation was closely connected to Japan’s modernization and diplomatic ambitions. The Imperial Hotel effectively became a private guest house for the nation, welcoming distinguished visitors from around the world.

 

The hotel later became internationally famous through its second main building, designed by legendary American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The new Imperial Hotel opened in 1923 and became one of Wright’s most celebrated works in Japan. Remarkably, its grand opening coincided with the Great Kantō Earthquake on September 1, 1923, and the building survived the disaster with relatively limited damage.

 

Japan understood that diplomacy was not only conducted at government meetings. The buildings, food, service, manners, and hospitality that visitors experienced also represented the country.

 

The Imperial Hotel was therefore more than a place to sleep.

 

It was part of how modern Japan introduced itself to the world.
