The Japanese word for “word” is 言葉 (kotoba).
Look at the kanji and you may notice something interesting:
言 = words / speech
葉 = leaf
葉 = leaf
So why does a “word” have a leaf in it?
An old and beautiful Japanese expression is 言の葉 (koto no ha), literally “leaves of words.”
In the preface to the Kokin Wakashū, a famous collection of Japanese poetry compiled more than 1,000 years ago, Japanese poetry is described as growing from the human heart:
The heart is the seed, and countless words become its leaves.
It is a wonderful image.
Our thoughts, emotions, and intentions begin inside us like seeds. When we express them, they appear outside as words—like leaves growing from a tree.
The exact historical development of the word kotoba is more complicated than simply saying “words + leaves,” but the image of 言の葉 has remained powerful in Japanese culture.
