Why Don’t You Start Your Own Business?

"I’d like to run my own company someday." 

 

I think quite a few people have probably thought this at one point or another. So why don't they actually do it? 
"I'm afraid of failing."
"I don't want to lose a stable income."
"I can’t afford it.”
"I don't know what I should do."
There are many reasons. 

 

However, I believe there’s a much simpler reason lying underneath it all: 

 

“I don’t know what to do, and I don’t want to take the time to figure it out.”

 

When you start a business, no one tells you what to do next. 

 

What should you name the company? What should you sell? Who should you sell it to? How much should you charge? Should you incorporate the business? How should you set up a bank account? What about taxes? Do you need a website? And how will you find your first customer? 

 

It’s full of unknowns. Yet, I don't think not knowing what to do is a valid reason for not starting a business. Starting a business is, in itself, the process of researching what you don’t know and making decisions one by one.

 

No entrepreneur knows everything right from the start. When I started Pacific Software Publishing, Inc. (PSPINC), I could never imagine this is what it would look like 39 years later. It was simply a continuous process of solving one problem at a time before moving on to the next. 

 

What you need to start a business isn't a perfect business plan, nor is it having all the answers. It's taking that first step.

 

If you don't know something, research it. 
If you can't do something, ask someone for help.
If you make a mistake, fix it. 
And keep moving forward regardless.

 

Perhaps the biggest difference between an entrepreneur and someone who never starts a business is not ability, but the willingness to act even when they don’t know what to do.
