The Company Built by a Small Samurai House in Tosa
In 1835, Yataro Iwasaki（岩崎彌太郎）was born in rural Tosa, present-day Kochi Prefecture.
His family had once belonged to the samurai class, but his great-grandfather had sold the family’s samurai status because of financial hardship. They were far from wealthy or powerful.
But Yataro was ambitious.
As Japan entered the dramatic changes of the Meiji Restoration, he became involved in the commercial operations of the Tosa domain. There he learned trade, finance, and shipping.
In 1870, he became involved in a shipping business that began with only three steamships.
From those three ships, the business grew rapidly.
It expanded from shipping into mining, shipbuilding, banking, insurance, warehousing, and international trade. What began with a man from a struggling former samurai household was becoming one of Japan’s great industrial organizations.
Yet Yataro did not live long enough to see what it would eventually become.
In 1885, suffering from stomach cancer, he died at only 50 years old. Near the end of his life, he expressed regret that of the ten things he had hoped to accomplish, he had completed only one or two.
Imagine that.
A man who had already built the foundation of an enormous business believed he had accomplished only a fraction of what he wanted to do.
And the company he left behind?
