In many Western traditions, attention is often drawn to what is there—what has been created, displayed, said, or accomplished. In Japanese aesthetics, however, sometimes the focus is equally on what is not there.

This is yohaku.
Modern life gives us very little of it. We fill every minute with meetings, messages, emails, news, entertainment, and social media. Even when we have five free minutes, we reach for our phones.
But our minds need empty space to think, imagine, reflect, and recover.
A calendar filled to 100% leaves no room for opportunity.
A mind filled to 100% leaves no room for new ideas.
Empty space is not nothing. It gives meaning to what is there.
