How many colors are in a rainbow?

 

If you grew up in the United States, you probably learned seven: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.

 

In modern Japan, children also learn that a rainbow has seven colors. But historically, Japanese people sometimes described the rainbow using five colors.

 

Traditional Japanese color concepts were influenced by the Chinese Five Elements philosophy. The five symbolic colors were blue/green, red, yellow, white, and black. “Five colors” did not necessarily mean that people could see only five colors. It was a cultural way of organizing and describing the colorful world around them.

 

Later, Western science and education introduced the seven-color classification associated with Isaac Newton, and seven became standard in Japan.

 

But here is the interesting part:

 

A rainbow does not actually have lines separating one color from another. It is a continuous spectrum of light.

 

Nature creates the rainbow.
We decide how many colors it has.
