Jumon (呪文) — Magic Words in Everyday Japan
In Japanese, jumon (呪文) usually means a spell or incantation—words believed to have the power to make something happen. But jumon is not limited to wizards, magic, or ancient rituals. We sometimes use it in ordinary life.
One of the first jumon many Japanese children hear is:
「痛いの痛いの飛んでいけ！」
Itai no, itai no, tonde ike!
“Pain, pain, fly away!”
Itai no, itai no, tonde ike!
“Pain, pain, fly away!”
When a child falls and hurts a knee, a parent may gently rub the painful spot, say these words, and then pretend to throw the pain far away.
Of course, the words do not medically remove the pain. But somehow, the child may stop crying and feel better.
Perhaps that is the real power of a jumon.
Words can calm us, encourage us, and sometimes change how we feel. Adults have their own jumon, too: “I can do this.” “Everything will be okay.” “One more try.”
