About Japan — What Is Obon (お盆)?

If you visit Japan in the middle of August, you may notice something unusual. Offices become quiet, trains and highways become crowded, and many people travel back to their hometowns.

 

This is Obon (お盆).

 

Obon is a traditional Japanese period for remembering and honoring ancestors. It has Buddhist roots, originating from the Buddhist observance called Urabon-e (盂蘭盆会). However, over centuries it blended with older Japanese beliefs about ancestors and spirits, as well as customs influenced by Shinto. Today, many Japanese observe Obon as a cultural and family tradition regardless of religious belief.

 

During Obon, people may visit family graves, clean gravestones, offer flowers and incense, and gather with relatives. Traditionally, it is believed that the spirits of deceased family members return home during this period. Some communities also hold Bon Odori (盆踊り), traditional summer dances.

 

Obon is generally observed around August 13–16, although dates vary by region. It is not an official national holiday, but many businesses close or people take vacation.
