若気の至り — Experience Counts

There is a Japanese expression, 若気の至り (wakage no itari). It describes the mistakes or reckless decisions we make simply because we are young and inexperienced.
 
Looking back, we sometimes wonder, “Why did I do that?” Often, the answer is simple: we didn’t know any better.
 
Knowledge can be taught through books, schools, and advice. Experience is different. It comes from making decisions, living with the results, failing, recovering, and trying again.
 
That is why experience counts.
 
As we get older, we often become more cautious—not because we have lost courage, but because we know what can go wrong. Yet youth has an advantage too. Sometimes not knowing all the risks gives us the courage to try something an experienced person might avoid.
 
若気の至り is not always something to regret. Mistakes become lessons, and reckless decisions sometimes become opportunities.
 
Experience gives us wisdom, but youth gives us courage. We need both.
