Some of you may know the Japanese manga and anime Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End (葬送のフリーレン).
 
One of the ideas behind the story is something deeply rooted in Japanese thinking: 諸行無常 (Shogyo Mujo) — nothing lasts forever.
 
People grow older. Friends disappear. Great adventures become memories. Companies rise and fall. Technologies come and go. Even things that once seemed permanent eventually change.
 
This may sound sad, but 諸行無常 is not necessarily pessimistic.
 
Because things do not last forever, the time we have becomes more valuable.
 
When business is good, do not assume it will always be good. Keep improving and prepare for change. When times are difficult, remember that hardship will not last forever either.
 
We cannot stop change. We can only decide how we respond to it.
 
Perhaps that is one reason Frieren’s long journey feels so meaningful.
 
Nothing lasts forever.
 
And that is precisely why today matters.
