Akirameru — More Than Giving Up
The Japanese word あきらめる (akirameru) is usually translated into English as “to give up.”
 
But its origin tells a deeper story.
 
Akirameru is related to 明らか (akiraka), meaning “clear” or “obvious.” Historically, the word carried the sense of seeing something clearly, understanding the truth, or recognizing a situation for what it really is.
 
Only later did it develop the modern meaning of giving up or letting go.
 
This difference is important.
 
Sometimes we continue fighting simply because we do not want to admit that something is not working. But there comes a point when we must look at reality clearly.
 
That does not necessarily mean failure.
 
In business, akirameru can mean recognizing that a product will not succeed, that a strategy needs to change, or that resources should be used somewhere else.
 
Giving up because something is difficult is weakness.
 
Walking away because you clearly understand reality can be wisdom.
 
Sometimes the courage to stop is just as important as the courage to continue.
