The Japanese word 根性 (konjo) is often translated as “guts,” “grit,” or “determination,” but none of these captures its meaning completely.
The characters are 根, meaning “root,” and 性, meaning “nature” or “character.” Historically, the word had connections to a person’s fundamental nature or disposition. Over time, however, konjo came to describe the inner strength to endure hardship and keep going.
In Japan, you may hear 根性がある (konjo ga aru), meaning someone “has guts” or has strong determination. The opposite, 根性なし (konjo nashi), describes someone who gives up easily.
There is also 根性論 (konjo-ron), the belief that determination and mental toughness can overcome almost any difficulty. This way of thinking became particularly associated with Japanese sports, schools, and workplaces.
Konjo is not simply working hard.
It means continuing when you are tired, uncomfortable, frustrated, or ready to quit.
Today, we know that determination alone cannot solve every problem. Strategy, knowledge, and efficiency matter too.
But sometimes, after all the planning and technology, you still need a little 根性.
