There Is No Word for This in Japan
Have you ever noticed what longtime couples call each other?

 

In English-speaking countries, couples often use affectionate names such as “Honey,” “Sweetheart,” “Darling,” “Dear,” or “Babe.” Even after decades of marriage, you may still hear someone call their spouse “Honey.”

 

This is not limited to English. In France, couples say “mon amour” (my love) or “mon cœur” (my heart). Germans use “Schatz” (treasure) or “Liebling” (darling). Italians say “amore” (love) or “tesoro” (treasure), while Spanish speakers may use “mi amor” (my love), “mi vida” (my life), or “corazón” (heart).

 

Then there is Japan.

 

Japanese has surprisingly few everyday romantic pet names for longtime partners. Couples may use each other’s names. After having children, many call each other “Papa,” “Mama,” “Otōsan,” or “Okāsan.” Some longtime couples simply say “Nee” (hey) to get the other person’s attention.

 

Of course, this does not mean Japanese couples love each other less.

 

Perhaps affection in Japan has traditionally been expressed more through actions than words—preparing food, taking care of each other, and sharing everyday life.

 

Different cultures express love differently. In Japan, sometimes love is something you do rather than something you say.
