Tensai to kichigai wa kami hitoe.
 
It means, “Genius and madness are separated by only a sheet of paper.”
 
The expression kami hitoe (紙一重) literally means “the thickness of one sheet of paper.” In Japanese, it describes two things that appear very different but are actually separated by only a very small difference.
 
A genius often sees something others cannot see, continues when others would stop, or becomes obsessed with something most people consider unimportant.
 
Before that person succeeds, such behavior may look strange or even foolish.
 
But when the same behavior produces an extraordinary result, people may suddenly call that person a genius.
 
That is what makes this Japanese expression interesting.
 
The difference may not be intelligence alone. It may be persistence, obsession, timing, or simply the final result.
 
Society often judges unusual people by what they eventually accomplish.
 
Perhaps that is why genius and madness can sometimes appear to be only kami hitoe — one sheet of paper apart.
