Urashima Tarō — The Japanese Man Who Lost His Time
Urashima Tarō (浦島太郎) is one of Japan’s most famous folk tales.
 
The story begins with a fisherman named Urashima Tarō who saves a turtle. In return for his kindness, the turtle takes him beneath the sea to the beautiful Dragon Palace, Ryūgū-jō (竜宮城).
 
There, he meets Princess Otohime and enjoys what seems to be only a few wonderful days. Eventually, however, he misses his home and decides to return.
 
Before he leaves, Otohime gives him a mysterious box called a tamatebako (玉手箱). She gives him only one warning: never open it.
 
When Urashima returns home, nothing is familiar. His family, friends, and house are gone. He soon discovers that hundreds of years have passed while he was away.
 
Confused and alone, he finally opens the forbidden box. White smoke rises from it, and Urashima instantly becomes an old man.
 
Urashima Tarō is more than a children’s story. It reminds us that time never stops. We may leave home expecting everything to remain the same, but when we return, the world—and sometimes we ourselves—may have changed forever.
