Komorebi — Sunlight Through the Leaves

The Japanese word komorebi (木漏れ日) describes sunlight filtering through the leaves of trees, creating shifting patterns of light and shadow on the ground.

 

It is not limited to one particular season. Komorebi can appear whenever trees have leaves and sunlight passes through them. However, the word is most often associated with late spring and summer, when the leaves are thick, green, and full of life. The contrast between the bright sunlight and the cool shade makes the dancing light especially beautiful.

 

Autumn also creates wonderful komorebi. Sunlight passing through red, orange, and yellow leaves gives the scenery a warmer and more nostalgic feeling. Winter sunlight through bare branches can be beautiful too, but it does not quite have the same meaning because there are few leaves to filter the light.

 

Komorebi is more than a description of sunlight. It captures a peaceful moment that is constantly changing. The wind moves the leaves, the patterns shift, and the same scene can never be repeated exactly.

 

Perhaps that is why komorebi feels so Japanese: quiet, temporary, and beautiful precisely because it does not last.
