道 — The Way Has No End
 
The Japanese character 道 can be read as michi, meaning “road,” or dō, meaning “the way.”
 
We see 道 in many Japanese traditions: jūdō (柔道), kendō (剣道), sadō (茶道), shodō (書道), and bushidō (武士道). These are not simply techniques to be learned. Each represents a lifelong journey of practice, learning, and self-improvement.
 
道 is not something we completely master. There is no final destination where we can say, “I have learned everything.” As long as we continue living and learning, 道 continues.
 
Sometimes we follow a path created by those who came before us. Eventually, however, that path may disappear. Then we must enter unknown territory and open a new way.
 
Every step changes the ground beneath our feet. When we look back, we realize that the place where we walked has become a path.
 
道 is not only something we follow. It is something we create.
 
This is how my book, 88 Japanese Wisdom, ends. But like 道 itself, an ending is also the beginning of the road ahead.
 
Where you have walked becomes your 道.
