Mottainai: When “What a Waste” Keeps Us from Moving Forward

 

The Japanese word mottainai (もったいない) expresses the feeling that something is too valuable to waste. It reminds us to appreciate what we have and use our resources carefully.

 

But that same feeling can make it difficult to let go.

 

We keep things we no longer use because we paid for them. We continue projects that no longer make sense because we have already invested so much time and money. In business, we may hesitate to discontinue an unsuccessful service, thinking, “We have come too far to stop now.”

 

This is known as the sunk cost effect: allowing past investments that cannot be recovered to influence our decisions about the future.

 

I understand that feeling. Building something takes effort, and walking away can feel like admitting that the effort was wasted.

 

However, the question we need to ask is, “Does continuing make sense from this point forward?”

 

Knowing when to cut our losses is part of responsible management. We can appreciate what we learned while deciding to stop.

 

If our fear of wasting the past causes us to waste the future, perhaps that is the real mottainai.
