Even a Simple Question Can Be Controversial: Japan’s Five Closest Neighbors

Japan is an island nation, but it is much closer to its neighbors than many people realize.

 

Measured from Japan’s outlying islands and using approximate straight-line distances, its five closest neighbors are:

 

Russia — about 43 kilometers from Hokkaido
South Korea — about 50 kilometers from Tsushima
Taiwan — about 108–111 kilometers from Yonaguni Island
China — roughly 330–350 kilometers from Japan’s southwestern islands
North Korea — several hundred kilometers across the Sea of Japan
This seemingly simple list can quickly become controversial. The precise order and distances depend on which islands and coastal points are used. Taiwan’s political status is disputed, and some islands in the region are claimed by more than one government.

 

This list is therefore intended as a geographical observation, not a political declaration.

 

Japan is often described as isolated because it is surrounded by water. Geographically, however, it sits remarkably close to Russia, the Korean Peninsula, Taiwan, and China.

 

The ocean separates Japan from its neighbors, but it has also connected them through trade, travel, culture, conflict, and history. These short distances remind us that Japan is not at the edge of Asia. It is positioned directly beside some of the region’s most influential countries and economies.

 

Sometimes, even a simple question such as “Which country is closest to Japan?” does not have a simple answer.
