Nagi: The Danger of Perfect Calm

 

The Japanese word 凪 (nagi) describes a time when the wind dies down and the sea becomes calm. The water may look peaceful and beautiful, but for traditional sailing ships, such calm could become a deadly situation.

 

Without wind, a sailing ship cannot move. It may remain trapped at sea while its crew slowly runs out of food, drinking water, and time. A storm looks dangerous, but at least its danger is obvious. Nagi is different because danger hides behind tranquility.

 

Business can also experience nagi.

 

There may be no complaints, no emergencies, no major losses, and no visible competitors. Everything appears stable. However, the company may have stopped moving. Employees become comfortable, customers’ needs begin to change, and competitors quietly prepare their next move.

 

A peaceful period is not necessarily a safe period. It may simply mean that the wind has stopped.

 

When business is calm, leaders should not fall asleep. They should use that time to inspect the ship, study the horizon, develop new ideas, and prepare for the next wind.

 

Calm is valuable—but standing still can be deadly.
