Amayadori — Taking Shelter from the Rain
The Japanese word 雨宿り (amayadori) means taking temporary shelter from the rain.

 

雨 (ame) means “rain,” while 宿り (yadori) comes from a word meaning “to stay” or “to take shelter.” In English, we might simply say, “I took shelter from the rain.” However, amayadori often suggests a particular scene: someone standing beneath the eaves of a building, under a tree, at a bus stop, or inside the entrance of a small shop while waiting for the rain to pass.

 

It is not usually a planned stop. You are forced to pause because of something beyond your control.

 

That pause can become an unexpected moment of peace. You may notice the sound of rain, watch people rushing by with umbrellas, or begin a conversation with another person waiting beside you. In Japanese stories, an amayadori can even become the beginning of a friendship or romance.

 

Modern life encourages us to keep moving, but nature sometimes makes us stop. Perhaps that is why amayadori feels like more than simply avoiding the rain.

 

It is a small, unplanned break given to us by the weather.
