Mezame — Awakening

 

The Japanese word 目覚め (mezame) means “awakening.” Its most direct meaning is waking up from sleep, but it can also describe a much deeper realization.

 

We often live according to habits, assumptions, and expectations created by other people. We may continue working in the same way simply because it feels familiar. Then, one day, something happens. A failure, illness, conversation, or unexpected opportunity changes how we see the world. It becomes a moment of awakening.

 

An awakening does not necessarily give us an immediate answer. Instead, it allows us to recognize a question that we had never considered before. Am I using my time wisely? Is this really the life I want? Is my business still serving its original purpose?

 

Once we awaken to something, it is difficult to return to our previous way of thinking. Awareness brings responsibility. We must decide whether to act on what we have discovered or pretend that we never saw it.

 

Every morning gives us a physical awakening. But throughout life, we experience other awakenings—moments when our eyes open to truth, possibility, and change.

 

The important question is not simply whether we have awakened, but what we will do now that we are awake.
