A Scene from Showa 昭和 Japan

If you did not grow up in Japan, the word Showa may mean little to you. Showa was the era of Emperor Hirohito, lasting from 1926 to 1989. It included war and hardship, followed by recovery and remarkable economic growth. When people speak fondly of a “Showa scene,” however, they are often remembering the ordinary streets and daily life of the postwar decades.

 

Imagine children walking home from school with their randoseru backpacks. They stop at a tiny candy shop, where the owner knows their names. A local train passes beyond the rooftops. Someone has left a bicycle outside, and a neighbor calls out a greeting as the sun begins to set.

 

Those memories can make Showa look simpler than it really was. Life had its difficulties, and people worked hard. Still, there is warmth in the image of a neighborhood where familiar faces were part of each day.

 

Perhaps that is why a Showa street can stir nostalgia even in someone who never lived there. The buildings and clothes belong to another time, but the feeling of coming home is familiar.
