What Do You See in the Moon?

Today is Jūgoya in Japan, the traditional night for admiring the autumn moon. People look up at the sky, enjoy the moonlight, and share stories about what they see on the moon’s surface.
 
In Japan, many children grow up hearing that a rabbit lives there. If you look at the dark patterns on the moon, you might see it pounding mochi, a traditional rice cake, with a wooden mallet.
 
I remember looking up at the moon and trying to find it. Once someone shows you the rabbit, it becomes hard not to see it.
 
In other places, people see a face and call it the “Man in the Moon.” The moon is the same wherever we stand, yet the stories we bring to it are different. I like that. A shape in the sky can become a story passed from one generation to the next.
