Dame-moto: “Nothing to Lose”

The Japanese expression だめもと (dame-moto) is short for だめでもともと. It means that even if something does not work out, you have little or nothing to lose by trying.

A natural English equivalent is “You have nothing to lose.”

For example, you might apply for a job even if you are not sure you will get it. You might ask for help, make a proposal, or try something new. If the answer is no, you are back where you started. But if you succeed, you may open a door you never expected.

“Nothing to lose” does not mean every risk is worth taking. It means that when the cost of trying is small and the possibility of success is meaningful, it may be better to give it a chance than to wonder what might have happened.

Sometimes the result is not what we hoped for. Even then, trying can teach us something. The real regret may come from never making the attempt.

So, when you find yourself hesitating, ask: What do I have to lose? If the answer is “not much,” perhaps it is worth trying.
