“Bocchi”: A Japanese Word for Being on Your Own

In Japanese, ぼっち (bocchi) is an informal word for someone who is alone, especially in a situation where people are usually with friends or family. It can sound playful or self-deprecating, though depending on the context, it may also suggest loneliness.

 

You may hear ぼっちめし (bocchi meshi), meaning eating a meal alone. Meshi is a casual word for “food” or “meal.” Another popular expression is クリぼっち (kuri-bocchi), which combines Christmas with bocchi and refers to spending Christmas alone. Since Christmas in Japan is often associated with couples, friends, or family gatherings, people may use the phrase with a little humor when they have no special plans.

 

These expressions reflect a modern Japanese habit of giving everyday experiences short, memorable names. They can make being alone sound lighter, but they also touch on a feeling many people know.

 

As a business owner, I have come to understand that there are times when you must stand on your own. You may be surrounded by employees, customers, and partners, yet the final responsibility for a decision can rest with you alone. You cannot always share every worry or uncertainty with the people around you. That can feel lonely.

 

But being alone does not always mean being unhappy. Some decisions require quiet time to think clearly and take responsibility for what comes next. A meal alone can be peaceful, and a quiet Christmas can be just right. What matters is whether we feel comfortable with the time we spend on our own—and whether we can use that time to understand ourselves and move forward.
