You Can Never Take Back Spoken Words

In Japan, there’s a saying that once you’ve said something, you can’t take them back. Even if you apologize or clarify your meaning later, you can never return to the moment before those words reached someone's ears.

In the heat of a conversation, it’s easy to let our emotions take over and say something harsher than we intended. Even without intending to hurt someone, those words can stay with them and affect a relationship for a long time. Conversely, words of encouragement and gratitude can uplift and support someone when they need it most. Words carry a genuine power to move human hearts.

That’s why I believe it is important to pause for a moment before speaking. Ask yourself: "Will this phrase truly convey what I mean?" or "Am I speaking out of pure emotion right now?" Taking a few seconds to breathe lets you choose a better way to express yourself.

This doesn't mean bottling up your thoughts or avoiding difficult conversations. Sometimes, we need to express our opinions, concerns, or frustrations. However, we can choose words that focus on resolving the issue and explaining our perspective, rather than attacking the other person.

Whether at work or at home, everyday conversations build trust. This is especially true for leaders and people in positions of authority—their words often carry far more weight than they realize. For this reason, I constantly try to remind myself to pause before I speak.

Rather than regretting our words after speaking, let us take a moment to think before we say them. That small habit can be a way of showing respect for others while also protecting ourselves.
