亀の甲より年の功 — The Wisdom That Comes with Experience
In Japanese, we have a saying: “Kame no kō yori toshi no kō.” Literally, it means “The wisdom of years is worth more than a turtle’s shell.”
The expression plays on two words pronounced kō: one means “shell,” and the other refers to the value gained through years of experience.
Knowledge is important. We can read books, attend classes, and gather information. But experience teaches us things that information alone cannot.
You may know how to start a business. Running one teaches you what to do when a customer leaves, a project fails, or a difficult decision cannot wait.
Over time, we begin to recognize patterns. We learn when to speak, when to listen, and when to be patient. Sometimes, we sense a problem before we can fully explain why.
Of course, age alone does not make someone wise. Experience becomes wisdom when we reflect on what happened and learn from it.
I still have much to learn. But some of my most valuable lessons came from mistakes I would never choose to repeat.
We cannot always borrow someone else’s experience. We can, however, listen to the wisdom they earned.
