Japanese Wisdom: Remember After the Pain Is Gone

喉元過ぎれば熱さを忘れる

This Japanese saying literally means, “Once it passes the throat, we forget the heat.”

When we swallow something hot, we feel its heat intensely. But once it passes our throat, that discomfort quickly fades. The saying describes how easily we forget hardship after it is over.

During difficult times, we promise ourselves that we will change. We will take better care of our health, prepare more carefully, or appreciate the people who help us. Yet when life becomes comfortable again, those promises can fade.

Moving forward is natural. But forgetting the lesson can lead us back to the same mistake. Forgetting the help we received can also make us take others for granted.

We do not need to carry yesterday’s pain forever. We should carry the wisdom it gave us—and gratitude for those who stood beside us.

When the heat is gone, remember what it taught you.

ABOUT THIS BLOG

I was born and raised in Japan and have spent most of my adult life in the United States. Through this blog, I share Japanese culture, language, expressions, and wisdom. My goal is not to say one culture is better, but to explore different perspectives and what we can learn from them.

Your comments are always welcome.
