Kaibutsu: Be Extraordinary in Your Own Way

The Japanese word 怪物 (kaibutsu) means “monster.” But it can be used in both a good and a bad sense.

Someone with extraordinary talent—an athlete, musician, or entrepreneur—may be called a kaibutsu with admiration. Their ability goes far beyond what people consider ordinary.

The same word can also describe someone whose cruelty or destructive behavior inspires fear.

What makes the difference is how you use what makes you extraordinary.

For me, the goal is to become a kaibutsu in your own way.

You do not have to be great at everything. Find something that matters to you. Develop your ability, keep improving, and aim for a level that makes people stop and notice.

Do not settle for being ordinary simply because it feels comfortable.

Become a kaibutsu—not by frightening people, but by showing them what is possible.

ABOUT THIS BLOG

I was born and raised in Japan and have spent most of my adult life in the United States. Through this blog, I share Japanese culture, language, expressions, and wisdom. My goal is not to say one culture is better, but to explore different perspectives and what we can learn from them.

Your comments are always welcome.
