Why Do Japanese People Love Cherry Blossoms?

Cherry blossoms—桜 (sakura)—are beautiful. But perhaps what makes them so meaningful is how briefly they stay.

They bloom, brighten our world, and then fall. We cannot make them last. We can only appreciate them while they are here.

A Japanese verse expresses this beautifully:

散る桜 残る桜も 散る桜
Chiru sakura, nokoru sakura mo, chiru sakura.

“Cherry blossoms fall. Those that remain will also fall.”

Watching petals drift away, we may feel sadness. Yet the flowers still on the branches share the same fate. Their time simply has not come.

Our lives are much the same. We say goodbye to others while continuing our own journey, sometimes forgetting that our time is also limited.

To me, this is part of why sakura touches the Japanese heart. Its beauty reminds us to appreciate what we have today.

We cannot keep the blossoms forever. But we can pause, look up, and enjoy them.

And we can do the same with the people in our lives.
