縁 — The Connections That Shape Our Lives
The Japanese word 縁 (en) is difficult to translate with a single English word. It can mean connection, relationship, bond, fate, or even an opportunity created through meeting someone.

The word 縁日 (Ennichi) originally refers to a special day connected with a Buddhist deity or Shinto kami. People gathered at temples and shrines, and merchants began setting up stalls for food, games, and entertainment. That tradition eventually created the lively Ennichi festivals we know today.

But the important word here is 縁.

In business, we often talk about strategy, technology, money, and opportunity. But many businesses begin with something much simpler: a connection between people.

You meet someone.
Someone introduces you to someone else.
A conversation creates an idea.
An idea becomes a business.

We like to believe that we carefully planned everything, but when we look back, many important moments in life began with encounters we could never have planned.

Japanese people sometimes say:

ご縁を大切に。
Treasure the connections you are given.

You cannot control every opportunity that comes your way. But you can decide how you treat the people you meet.

In business, leadership, and life, never underestimate 縁.

Your next great opportunity may begin with the person standing in front of you today.
