Sharing Food, Building Relationships
At a Japanese izakaya, people often order several dishes for everyone to share. Sashimi, grilled chicken, fried chicken, and salad arrive at the center of the table. Each person takes a little onto a small plate.
Everyone has different tastes, but the meal becomes something they enjoy together.
“Would you like some?”
“Try this.”
“Shall we order another?”
“Try this.”
“Shall we order another?”
These small exchanges create opportunities to show consideration. You notice what others enjoy, offer a dish, and make sure everyone gets a share.
Of course, sharing food exists in many cultures. But in Japan, it is a familiar part of social dining—and it can play a useful role in business relationships.
Across a meeting table, people tend to remain conscious of their titles and responsibilities. Around shared dishes, conversation can become more relaxed. You begin to know the person behind the business card.
A shared meal does not guarantee trust. That takes time and consistent behavior. But it can create an atmosphere where people feel comfortable enough to start building it.
When you visit Japan for business, leave some time for dinner together. The conversation over a shared plate may help you understand each other better.
