さようなら — I Understand, So We Go Our Separate Ways
Most people outside Japan know さようなら (Sayounara / Sayonara) simply as “goodbye.”

But the Japanese expression carries a deeper idea.

さよう (sayou) means “so,” “that way,” or “such being the case.”
なら (nara) means “if that is the case.”

Put together, さようなら can be understood as:

“I understand. If that is so, then we go our separate ways.”

That is quite different from simply saying goodbye.

There is an element of acceptance in the word. We understand the situation. We accept that our paths are separating. And rather than fighting against it, we acknowledge it and move on.

Perhaps that is why さようなら can sometimes sound more final than the English “goodbye.”

When Japanese people expect to see each other again soon, they often say またね — “see you again” — instead.

さようなら is different.

It recognizes that, at least for now, our paths divide.

There does not have to be anger.
There does not have to be regret.

I understand.
So we go our separate ways.

That is さようなら.
