Too Many Captains Will Sail the Ship Up a Mountain

There is a Japanese proverb that literally means, “When there are too many captains, the ship will sail up a mountain.”
A ship cannot sail up a mountain, of course. That is exactly the point.
When too many people try to lead, give instructions, or make decisions, an organization can lose its direction. Everyone may have good intentions, but without clear leadership, even a capable team can end up somewhere nobody intended.
Discussion is important. Different opinions are valuable. A good leader should listen to people with different knowledge and experience. But discussion cannot continue forever.
Someone has to take charge.
A team can discuss. Experts can advise. A committee can recommend. But eventually, one person must make the decision and accept responsibility for the result.
This is especially important in business. When everyone is responsible, sometimes nobody is truly responsible.
Leadership is not about ignoring others. It is about listening, deciding, and having the courage to say:
“This is our direction, and I take responsibility.”
That is leadership.
