I Work and Work, Yet Life Does Not Get Easier

I work and work,
yet still my life does not become easier.
I quietly look at my hands.
yet still my life does not become easier.
I quietly look at my hands.
These famous words were written by Japanese poet Takuboku Ishikawa (石川啄木) and published in Ichiaku no Suna(A Handful of Sand) in 1910.
What makes this poem powerful is the final image:
“I quietly look at my hands.”
He does not shout. He does not blame anyone. He simply looks at the hands that have worked so hard and wonders why all that effort has not made life easier.
More than a century later, the feeling remains familiar.
We are often told that if we work hard, we will succeed. But life does not always work that way. Hard work is important, but effort alone does not guarantee prosperity.
Sometimes we must stop looking only at how hard we are working and ask a different question:
Is what I am doing actually moving me forward?
Working harder is not always the answer. Sometimes we need to change what we are doing.
