居心地 — Where You Feel at Ease
The Japanese word 居心地 (igokochi) describes how you feel simply by being in a certain place.

The word itself helps explain the meaning.

居 (i) comes from 居る (iru) — “to be,” “to stay,” or “to be present in a place.”

心地 (kokochi) means “feeling,” “sensation,” or “state of mind.”

Put them together:

居 + 心地 = 居心地

Literally, it is the feeling you have while being somewhere.

That is why igokochi means more than physical comfort.

A soft chair may be comfortable, but that does not necessarily make a place 居心地がいい (igokochi ga ii).

A place with good igokochi is somewhere you can relax and be yourself. It could be your home, a small café, your office, or even another country.

And it has little to do with luxury.

A five-star hotel can have poor igokochi, while an old neighborhood restaurant with worn chairs can have wonderful igokochi.

People can create it too. When you are with people who make you feel accepted and relaxed, even an unfamiliar place can become comfortable.

I try my best to make my company a place where customers feel welcome and comfortable. I want people who visit us to feel that they can relax, talk openly, and know that they are welcome.

That, to me, is also 居心地.

It is not simply a comfortable place.
It is a place where you feel comfortable being yourself.
