地ならし — Preparing the Ground

地ならし — Preparing the Ground
The Japanese word 地ならし (jinarashi) literally means “leveling the ground.”

地 means ground or earth, and ならし means making something level and ready.

Before you build something new, you must prepare the ground. Rocks are removed, uneven areas are flattened, and sometimes what was there before must be cleared away.

Fans of Attack on Titan may recognize 地ならし as the Japanese term translated as “The Rumbling.” In the story, the idea of leveling the ground is taken to a terrifying and destructive extreme.

But there is wisdom in the original meaning.

In business, we often want to start something new—a product, system, organization, or strategy. But simply introducing something new does not mean people will accept it.

Old assumptions may need to be challenged. Old systems may need to change. People need time to understand what is coming.

That preparation is 地ならし.

Before creating something new, first prepare the ground for it.
