異邦人 — Being Somewhere, but Not Belonging
The Japanese word 異邦人 (ihōjin) literally means “a person from another country.”
The Japanese word 異邦人 (ihōjin) literally means “a person from another country.”
異 means different, 邦 means country or homeland, and 人 means person. But the word can suggest something deeper than simply “foreigner.” It can describe someone who is present, yet somehow does not completely belong.
In 1979, Japanese singer Saki Kubota released the famous song Ihōjin. The title helped give the word a romantic, distant, and slightly lonely feeling in modern Japanese culture.
You do not have to be a foreigner to become an ihōjin.
Live away from your hometown long enough, and when you return, everything may look familiar—but something feels different. Perhaps the town changed. Perhaps you changed.
People who live between countries and cultures often understand this feeling well. Sometimes you belong to both places, yet completely to neither.
But being an outsider is not always a weakness.
Standing outside can allow you to see things that people inside no longer notice.
Sometimes distance gives us perspective.
