Omotenashi — When Ordinary Is Already High
The Japanese word omotenashi (おもてなし) is often translated as “hospitality.”
It comes from the verb motenasu (もてなす), meaning to receive, treat, or take care of someone.
Motenasu → Motenashi → Omotenashi
Omotenashi is often described as exceptional Japanese service. But perhaps that description misses the point.
In Japan, omotenashi is not supposed to be exceptional. It is ordinary.
You greet people properly. You pay attention. You keep things clean. You notice what someone may need. You try not to make others uncomfortable.
And traditionally, you do not expect a tip for doing these things.
There is no extra payment required to activate good service. Good service is simply part of doing the job properly.
That does not mean every service experience in Japan is perfect. It means the baseline expectation is different.
What visitors sometimes experience as “above and beyond” may feel completely ordinary to the person providing it.
Perhaps that is the real meaning of omotenashi.
It is not about making exceptional service ordinary.
It is about setting “ordinary” at a higher level.
