金槌 (Kanazuchi)
Knowing Your Weakness Is Golden
Knowing Your Weakness Is Golden
In Japanese, a person who cannot swim is called "Kanazuchi" (金槌), meaning "hammer."
Why a hammer?
Because a hammer has a heavy metal head. Drop it into water, and it sinks straight to the bottom. Someone who cannot swim is humorously compared to a hammer.
Interestingly, this expression connects with two popular stories.
In the Japanese manga and anime One Piece, people who eat Devil Fruits gain extraordinary powers but lose their ability to swim. Even the strongest characters become helpless in water.
In the Hollywood movie Unbreakable (2000), starring Bruce Willis, the main character possesses extraordinary strength and durability. Yet water is his greatest weakness. Despite his incredible abilities, he can still drown.
Both stories remind us of an important lesson.
Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. Being powerful does not mean being good at everything.
True wisdom is not simply knowing how strong you are. It is understanding where you are vulnerable and knowing when to ask for help.
Recognizing your weaknesses is not a sign of weakness. It is a sign of wisdom.
After all, even the strongest hammer sinks in water.
Knowing your strengths makes you powerful. Knowing your weaknesses makes you wise.
